It is the question almost every new patient asks: do braces hurt? The honest answer is that braces should not be painful, but you can expect some temporary soreness as your teeth begin to move. Knowing what is normal, and how to relieve it, makes the whole experience easier.

What braces actually feel like

Getting braces put on does not hurt; there are no shots or drilling. Within a few hours, though, you may feel pressure or tenderness as gentle forces start shifting your teeth. This is most noticeable for the first three to five days, then fades as your mouth adjusts. You may also feel minor irritation where brackets meet your cheeks until the tissue toughens up.

Soreness after adjustments

After each adjustment or new set of aligners, it is common to feel mild tightness for a day or two. This is a good sign that treatment is working. The discomfort is usually far milder than the initial week.

Seven ways to ease braces discomfort

  • Cold foods and water. Cold smoothies, yogurt, and ice water can soothe sore teeth and gums.
  • Soft diet. Stick to soups, pasta, eggs, and other soft foods during sore periods.
  • Orthodontic wax. Cover any bracket that rubs your cheek to prevent irritation.
  • Over-the-counter pain relief. Used as directed, a standard pain reliever can help on the first day or two.
  • Saltwater rinse. A warm rinse calms irritated gums and small sores.
  • Gentle brushing. Keeping teeth clean prevents added irritation. See our tips for brushing with braces.
  • Stay consistent. Wearing elastics and aligners as directed keeps treatment smooth and avoids setbacks.

Frequently asked questions

How long does braces pain last?

Initial soreness typically lasts three to five days, and discomfort after adjustments usually fades within one to two days.

Do braces hurt more than Invisalign?

Both cause temporary pressure as teeth move. Aligners have no brackets or wires to irritate the cheeks, but you may feel tightness with each new tray.

Is it normal for braces to hurt weeks later?

Ongoing pain is not typical. If something hurts beyond the usual adjustment period, contact us so we can check for a poking wire or loose bracket.
